About Sri Prasanna Tirupati Gangamma Ammavaru Temple
The Sri Prasanna Tirupati Gangamma Ammavaru Temple, located just 200 meters from the Kuppam Bus Station, is a revered 18th-century spiritual landmark dedicated to Goddess Gangamma, who is traditionally worshipped as the sister of Lord Venkateswara of Tirupati. According to local legend, Lord Venkateswara severed a piece of Gangamma’s cheek to restrain her habit of consuming corpses at burial grounds, and the fallen piece sanctified both Kuppam and Tirupati, giving the site deep mythological significance. Originally discovered as a stone form in a burial ground, the deity was later consecrated at the town center where the present temple stands. Recognized as the Gramadevata (guardian deity) of the region, the temple serves as an important cultural and religious hub at the tri-state border of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Its most notable event is the annual Gangamma Jatara in May, attracting hundreds of thousands of devotees for the rare Viswaroopa Darshanam, during which the goddess’s head is ceremonially fixed to the torso for public viewing. The temple also maintains a longstanding tradition of royal and political patronage, with local leaders and officials presenting silk robes (vastrams) to the deity during festival celebrations, reinforcing its deep historical, cultural, and spiritual importance to the region.
